At IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026, the iaa.prototype.club stage and work area in Hall 12 underwent a complete transformation on Thursday. Moving past slides and abstract pitches, developer teams took to the floor for an intense, hands-on Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) & Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) Hackathon—building and testing live code directly on a commercial vehicle parked at our booth.

How „Tool Detection“ Won the

IAA HACKATHON 2026

Moving Beyond PowerPoint: The SDV & BYOD Challenge

Co-organized with digital.auto, the IAA Hackathon was designed around a clear industrial premise: commercial vehicles are rapidly becoming programmable software platforms. To accelerate feature deployment, OEMs and fleet managers need standardized frameworks that allow external sensors, smart devices, and AI models to integrate seamlessly into vehicle architectures without multi-year hardware overhauls.

Teams were challenged to develop functional Generative AI and SDV prototypes solving real-world operational challenges. What made Hall 12 unique was the validation setup: teams didn’t just simulate their code—they deployed and tested their algorithms on a light commercial demo vehicle parked directly inside the prototype.club stand.

The Four Finalist Use Cases

After intense sprint sessions mentored by industry experts from Bosch Mobility, Deloitte, Ferdinand-Steinbeis-Institut (FSTI), emovation, GTSystem, and the Young Founders Network, four finalist teams emerged to present their functional prototypes on stage:

Gas Leakage Detection: Real-time sensor monitoring and predictive algorithms identifying hazardous gas leaks in commercial cargo compartments.

Drowsiness Detection: Vision-AI and biometric sensor integration tracking driver fatigue indicators to prevent highway accidents.

Damage Detection & Prevention: Automated camera and sensor workflows detecting exterior vehicle wear, body damage, and cargo shifting before fleet deployment.

Tools Detection: Intelligent computer vision tracking connected tools and equipment inside the cargo bay to prevent theft, loss, and operational downtime.

And the Winner Is: Tools Detection

At the 17:15 Award Ceremony, the jury—comprising experts from digital.auto, Bosch Mobility, Deloitte, and FSTI—crowned Tools Detection as the 1st place winner of the IAA 2026 Hackathon!

The jury was particularly impressed by the team’s immediate operational utility. Lost or forgotten equipment in service vans costs commercial fleets millions annually in lost billable hours and replacement hardware. By combining computer vision with on-vehicle edge processing, the winning prototype automatically audits cargo inventory in real time—alerting drivers via the vehicle dashboard before leaving a job site.

Ecosystem Support & Political Alignment

The hackathon wasn’t just a technical exercise; it served as a high-level meeting point for industry leaders and policymakers.

The day opened with a keynote panel on bridging startups, Mittelstand, and policy, featuring Gitta Connemann MdB (Parliamentary State Secretary at BMWK & Federal Government Commissioner for SME) alongside corporate leaders from Mahle New Ventures, Hyperdrives, Blockbrain, and Plug and Play.

The stand also hosted visits from Hildegard Müller (President of the VDA – Verband der Automobilindustrie) and State Secretary Christian Hirte (BMDV), who toured the hacker area to see live SDV prototyping in action.

What Comes Next?

The IAA Hackathon proved that when developer talent, open APIs, and real vehicle hardware come together under a structured challenge format, deployable solutions can be built in hours rather than months.

A huge congratulations to team Tools Detection and all the finalist teams!
