Four high-energy days in Hall 12 showed how quickly complex industry challenges turn into real-world code, shared infrastructure and new collaborations when startups, corporates, researchers and policymakers work side by side.
For prototype.club, the week was anchored by several defining milestones: the official launch of the “Airbnb for Test Infrastructure” initiative on Tuesday, the celebration of execution-backed corporate-startup partnerships at Wednesday’s Open Innovation Award Ceremony, and a live Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) & BYOD Hackathon on Thursday featuring real hardware at our booth.

Launching “Airbnb for Test Infrastructure”
Opening Germany’s R&D capacity
The week kicked off with a major strategic milestone for the commercial vehicle ecosystem. Alongside Sascha Knake-Langhorst (DLR) and Sebastian Grimm (ZF Group / move+ Accelerator), Dr. Christian Schweizer officially introduced the “Airbnb for Test Infrastructure” initiative on the IAA.prototype.club stage.
Germany possesses world-class testing facilities, simulation benches, and development infrastructure, but access has historically been fragmented. This new neutral marketplace enables research institutions, corporates, and startups to share underutilized testing capacity and pre-competitive know-how.
The launch gained immediate political alignment with visits from State Secretary Christian Hirte (BMDV), patron of IAA.prototype.club, who joined us at the stand to discuss how shared infrastructure strengthens the region's long-term competitive edge.
Celebrating real-world execution
Corporate-startup collaboration beyond pitch theatre
Wednesday centered on the Ecosystem & Award Day, proving that corporate-startup dealmaking thrives when built on clear validation rather than endless pitch cycles. Following an insightful R&D panel with MAN Truck & Bus, Manex AI, UnternehmerTUM, and TUM Venture Labs, the stage hosted the 2026 Open Innovation Award Ceremony.
Dr. Christian Schweizer and Nic Knapp (TUM Venture Labs) recognized five outstanding corporate-startup pairings that demonstrated exceptional prototyping velocity and joint execution:
The day concluded with an unfiltered panel on venture clienting featuring Rethink Ventures, Volvo Group, Allison Transmission, and MAN Truck & Bus, before transitioning directly into the official Startup Party sponsored by Rethink Ventures.
Live SDV & BYOD Hackathon
Code, hardware and “Tools Detection” victory
Thursday shifted full focus to hands-on development as Hall 12 turned into an active coding floor for our live Software-Defined Vehicle (SDV) & Bring-Your-Own-Device (BYOD) Hackathon, co-organized with digital.auto. Developer teams worked directly with real hardware integrated into a light commercial demo vehicle parked at the prototype.club booth. The event was supported by expert knowledge from Bosch and Deloitte team members.
Four finalist teams presented their functional prototypes during the afternoon pitch sessions: Gas Leakage Detection, Drowsiness Detection, Damage Detection & Prevention, and Tools Detection. At the 17:15 Award Ceremony, the jury awarded 1st place to Tools Detection for their seamless integration and immediate operational utility.
The hackathon was supported by an incredible mentor ecosystem including Bosch Mobility, Deloitte, Ferdinand-Steinbeis-Institut (FSTI), emovation, GTSystem, and the Young Founders Network.
High-level alignment
Connecting technical execution with industrial policy
Throughout the week, the IAA.prototype.club stage served as a bridge connecting technical execution with high-level industry policy. Thursday morning opened with a keynote panel on scaling automotive value creation, featuring Gitta Connemann MdB, Johannes Diem (Mahle New Ventures), Benjamin Hengstler (Hyperdrives), Uwe Hering (Blockbrain), and Robin Mayer (Plug and Play).
We were also honored to welcome Hildegard Müller (President of the VDA - Verband der Automobilindustrie) alongside delegations from the Hannover Messe leadership team and international partners from Bharat Mobility (India Day) and Startup Colors (Korea).
Their presence underlined a shared conviction: fostering agile, open innovation frameworks is critical to securing Europe's industrial leadership.
Where does this leave us?
IAA TRANSPORTATION 2026 made one thing clear: the commercial vehicle sector is ready to move fast when provided with neutral platforms, shared infrastructure, and structured open innovation pathways. The conversations, prototypes, and partnerships formed in Hall 12 don't end with the closing of the fair — they mark the start of active joint implementation.
