DriveX, an Estonian tech company, made a bold debut at our innovation competitions at IAA.prototype.club 2023, participating in the TÜV NORD challenge. Despite a late entry, DriveX showcased their prowess, securing the 2nd place. Their innovative solution for efficient data synchronization impressed the jury including Matthias Vaterrodt from innoTank and Roman Meier-Andrae from TÜV NORD Mobility. More support came from Claas Alexander Stroh and Christian Rohling. While they didn’t clinch the official follow-up contract, DriveX’s performance garnered attention, and discussions about potential collaborations are in progress.

How did you come to participate in the IAA.prototype.club 2023?

DriveX’s journey to the IAA.prototype.club 2023 Mobilitython began serendipitously. While exploring the IAA Mobility trade fair, they chanced upon the prototype.club booth. Intrigued by the ongoing challenge addressing the management of on-demand working hours for TÜV Nord employees in dealerships, DriveX felt an immediate connection to the problem. Despite the tight timeline, the prototype.club team welcomed them into the competition, setting the stage for a dynamic and engaging participation at the Mobilitython.

What was the challenge and what was your solution?

The challenge presented to DriveX at the IAA.prototype.club 2023 Mobilitython focused on devising a system to synchronize data between TÜV Nord inspectors and car dealerships, incorporating an incentive mechanism for the latter. Despite joining the competition with less than 24 hours remaining, DriveX swiftly developed a Figma prototype and a compelling PowerPoint presentation. Their solution aimed at creating a smart communication tool bridging customers and workshops, along with a digital maintenance book, showcasing their adaptability and innovation in a short timeframe.

How was the participation for you?

Participating in the IAA.prototype.club 2023 Mobilitython was a fast-paced yet rewarding experience for DriveX. Despite joining late, they embraced the challenge, enjoying the exciting on-site presentation where the engaged jury sparked interesting discussions. The dynamic exchange led to contact-sharing, indicating a positive trajectory for future collaboration. TÜV Nord expressed interest in linking DriveX with their colleagues in Scandinavia for a potential rollout, underlining the constructive outcomes arising from their participation.

IAA MOBILITY 2025 in Munich once again proved the power of true collaboration – when policymakers, corporates, startups, investors, and researchers come together in one place. For us at prototype.club, it was a special experience to bridge these perspectives and work jointly on the future of mobility.

Strong Impulses from Politics and Industry

It was an honor to welcome Hildegard Müller (VDA) at our booth and to share the stage with leaders such as Isabelle Kirschbaum-Rupf. With Christian Hirte (Federal Ministry for Transport) as patron and the VDA as partner, we were able to bring central challenges into focus – from very concrete problems to strategic questions shaping the industry’s future.

StartupFactory Masterclass – Surviving the Automotive Journey

In our StartupFactory Masterclass, we discussed with experts such as Dr. Jennifer Kaiser-Steiner (UnternehmerTUM), Stephanie Reimann Izhak (Volkswagen Group), Sebastian Grimm (move+ Accelerator), and Nic Knapp (TUM Venture Labs) how startups can survive in the highly complex automotive world.
The message was clear: work with the best solutions and avoid inefficient structures. This is exactly why prototype.club creates efficient, often cross-industry formats for collaboration.

Together Against Truck Parking Chaos

The shortage of truck parking has been known for decades – but never solved. Drivers lose valuable hours every day searching for spots, costing time, money, and nerves. At IAA, we officially kicked off a new initiative to finally address this:

  • Data provision: Mobilithek & DLR deliver open data

  • Innovation: Startups & technology partners create new solutions

  • Reach: Associations & politics ensure visibility and adoption

  • Validation: Drivers test and provide live feedback

The goal: within just one year, to create a scalable, data-driven standard for truck parking search – open, sustainable, and accessible for everyone.

At the Startup Get-Together, hosted by the Bavarian Ministry of Economic Affairs, international perspectives took center stage – with particularly strong impulses from the Israeli startup ecosystem.
A true highlight: the first-ever live investment on Tokenize.it, right on stage. Our CEO Christian took the opportunity to invest live in OmegaLambdaTec GmbH – a strong signal of how fast and transparent startup financing can work today.

At the VDA Mittelstandstag follow-up, Blockbrain showed how AI-driven knowledge management can boost productivity. With further insights from Bosch SDS, OmegaLambdaTec and BABLE Smart Cities, it became clear: these technologies are urgently needed for the industry’s future.

In one day, teams worked on BYOD solutions, crash-data systems, and agentic AI applications – showing how quickly innovation can move when the right people, platforms like digital.auto, Mendix and further technologies come together.

From Power Line to Innovation: How You Can Help Shape the Energy Transition

What we take for granted today was still a milestone just a few decades ago. The next chance to make history? It’s called SPARX – Safe Powerline Access & Remote eXchange.

1831 – Michael Faraday discovers electromagnetic induction.

1882 – In Berlin, electricity flows through a public grid for the first time.

1954 – Mobile cranes accelerate the construction of high-voltage towers, replacing time-consuming manual labor.

2001 – Drones are first used for power line inspections, significantly reducing costs compared to helicopter operations.

2026 – You and your team are on stage – presenting your solution that makes replacing spacer dampers more efficient and more cost-effective.

Because that’s exactly what’s possible. And exactly what’s being sought right now. Amprion – one of the four transmission system operators in Germany – ensures that electricity flows safely and reliably. A stable grid infrastructure is the foundation of the energy transition.

But even in such a critical system, there are processes that can be made faster, more ecological, and more cost-effective. Some tasks remain expensive, time-consuming, and require the utmost care – even though innovative technologies may exist that promise better solutions.

This challenge aims to address exactly that: How can we rethink the replacement of spacer dampers – and take maintenance to the next level?

No more working 30 meters up in the air, expensive helicopter flights, and complicated processes. Now is the time for innovation.

An Industry Under High Voltage

Germany’s extra-high-voltage grid spans around 36,000 kilometers – the backbone of our power supply. Amprion operates about 11,000 kilometers of it, connecting power producers and consumers from Lower Saxony to the Alps. Ensuring the safe and reliable operation of this network – and expanding it according to demand – is Amprion’s legal mandate. Within its grid area, roughly one-third of Germany’s economic output is generated.

These lines must be regularly inspected, maintained, and renewed. One of the key components: spacer dampers.

What Are Spacer Dampers?

Spacer dampers ensure that, in high-voltage lines, the individual conductors of a so-called bundled conductor (usually in pairs or groups of four) remain at a defined distance from each other. They dampen vibrations, prevent short circuits, and ensure mechanical stability. Without them: increased risk of grid faults and material wear.

Replacement and maintenance are labor-intensive – these processes are among the most expensive in grid maintenance and require special care as well as specialized expertise.

How spacer damper maintenance is typically done today:

  • Helicopter missions to reach the lines

  • Climbing specialist teams manually ascending towers and conductors

  • Use of cable cars for power lines, which require elaborate assembly

This is:

  • Cost-intensive (e.g., several thousand euros per helicopter mission)

  • Not scalable (given thousands of kilometers of lines)

  • Physically and safety demanding (handling extremely high voltages requires special precautions)

Why Robotics & Automation Are the Game Changer

What was considered a research project just a few years ago is now ready for deployment:

  • Line-inspection drones providing high-resolution real-time data

  • Gripper arms mounted on multicopters installing components without human intervention

  • Climbing robots performing bolting work on live lines

  • AI-powered systems fully automating material fatigue analysis

And the best part?

Automated systems are often cheaper than traditional methods today. They not only save on labor and downtime costs, but also reduce accident risks, response times, and emissions.

Why We’re Talking About This

Amprion has been working for years to make the power grid future-ready – continuously seeking to optimize processes. That’s exactly where we come in: bringing people and ideas together to find new approaches to concrete challenges like this one.

The Background

Amprion operates thousands of kilometers of high-voltage power lines – and keeping them in top condition is essential. Today, bundle spacers are replaced using helicopters, cable carts, or lifting platforms. While these methods have proven effective over the years, the expansion of power lines makes it crucial to find more scalable, cost-effective, and environmentally friendly solutions.

Top solutions can expect: Contracts, investments, or joint projects

The Challenge

Design a scalable tool or method for replacing bundle spacers on overhead power lines. The solution should ideally cover the following steps:

  • Removal of existing bundle spacers
  • Assessment of the conductor’s condition
  • Installation of new bundle spacers
  • Optional: installation of a repair rod

You can either focus on a specific task or deliver a full end-to-end solution. What matters most is a significant improvement. Existing Methods can be enhanced – or completely replaced. Ideally, these steps can be performed under live-line conditions.

The Background

Identifying technological developments at an early stage is a key success factor for Amprion as a transmission system operator. Today, trend research still requires extensive manual effort: information is collected selectively, analyzed individually, and often lacks automation.

With SONAR.AI, Amprion aims to take the next step – developing a smart system that automatically captures relevant signals from open sources, evaluates them intelligently, and enables faster, data-driven, and future-oriented decision-making.
